Memory, experience and imagination in the works of Lao and Hmong American authors

Description

This event provides a unique forum for Lao and Hmong American authors to discuss their work and intellectual endeavors. The writers, Kao Kalia Yang, Bryan Thao Worra and Thavisouk Phrasavath will reflect on their work before joining a larger conversation with the audience. The program presents a critical but engaging exploration of the role of memory, experience and imagination in each author’s writings against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and its aftermath, global migration, refugees, the diaspora, and life in America. The talk will locate Lao and Hmong Americans as part of the larger American story, featuring voices not often highlighted at the Library of Congress.

Her first memoir “The Latehomecomer” was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts among others. Most recently she has published a collection of short stories about the refugee life of various groups (Syrians, Bosnians, Liberians, Hmong) in her home state of Minnesota called “Somewhere in the Unknown World: A Collective Refugee Memoir.” Bryan Thao Worra Bryan Thao Worra is a Lao American poet and author of numerous works. He has received numerous awards for his work including from the Minnesota State Arts Board. He is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship. His latest work, entitled "Before we remember we dream," is a genre-breaking work blending memoir, myth, horror and science fiction to elucidate 45 years of Lao diaspora history. Thavisouk Phrasavath Thavisouk Phrasavath is a Lao American author of a memoir entitled “Stepped Out of the Womb” on his experiences as a refugee and life in America. He is also an Academy Award nominated director of a documentary about his family titled “Nerakhoon: The Betrayal.”
